Gay Holiday Destinations from the UK (2026)

Gay holiday destinations from the UK illustration, Fab Guys UK guide

For most people flying from the UK the shortlist is short: Gran Canaria, Sitges, Benidorm, Torremolinos, Mykonos and Ibiza. Those five or six absorb the large majority of British gay holiday traffic because they combine direct flights, a scene concentrated in walking distance, and prices that make sense in pounds. Everything else is a step up in cost, flight time, or both.

  • Gran Canaria is the only genuinely year-round option — the rest are seasonal.
  • Sitges is the easiest first gay holiday: small, walkable, 40 minutes from Barcelona airport.
  • Mykonos is the most expensive by a wide margin. Budget roughly double.
  • Most American “best gay destination” lists are useless from the UK — different flights, different costs.

How it works: Gay holiday destinations from the UK — Fab Guys UK

Choosing by what you actually want

  • Sun in December to March: Gran Canaria, effectively without competition. Everything Mediterranean is closed or cold.
  • First time, want it easy: Sitges. Small enough to walk everywhere, and Barcelona is there if you want a city day.
  • Tight budget: Benidorm. Nothing else in Europe comes close for a British traveller.
  • Long weekend, minimal effort: Amsterdam — an hour in the air.
  • Nightlife over beach: Berlin or Barcelona.
  • Do not care what it costs: Mykonos in August.

What the American guides get wrong for you

Provincetown, Fire Island, Key West and Palm Springs dominate English-language gay travel writing because most of it is written for Americans. From the UK they are eight to eleven hours in the air plus a domestic connection, and they price in dollars during a strong season. They are excellent places; they are simply not comparable to a four-hour flight to the Canaries.

If you do want them, we cover Provincetown and Palm Springs with the UK journey and cost in mind.

What to check before you act — Fab Guys UK

Timing matters more than the destination

The same place can be two different holidays depending on the week. Broad pattern:

  • Gran Canaria: busiest and most expensive around Maspalomas Pride in May and Winter Pride in November. Cheapest in the shoulder weeks either side.
  • Sitges: peaks around Carnival in February and Pride in June. Quiet and pleasant in September.
  • Mykonos: August is peak everything, including prices. June and September are far better value.
  • Spanish coast generally: August is when Spain itself holidays — busiest and dearest.

Before you book: the check that matters

Legal and social conditions for gay travellers vary enormously, and they change. Every destination above is straightforward, but if you are considering somewhere further afield, check the country’s entry on
FCDO travel advice — most country pages carry a specific LGBT+ section. That is the authoritative source, and it is updated as things change.

Practical points people forget

Frequently asked questions

What is the best gay holiday destination from the UK?

For winter sun, Gran Canaria — it is the only genuinely year-round option. For a first gay holiday, Sitges, because it is small, walkable and easy to reach. For the lowest cost, Benidorm.

Where is cheapest for a gay holiday from the UK?

Benidorm, consistently, followed by Torremolinos and Gran Canaria outside peak weeks. Mykonos is the most expensive of the popular options by a considerable margin.

Which gay resort is open in winter?

Gran Canaria. The Mediterranean resorts — Sitges, Mykonos, Ibiza — largely shut down or go very quiet between October and April.

Is Mykonos worth the money?

It depends whether the scene and the setting matter more to you than the cost. Budget roughly double a Spanish equivalent, and consider June or September rather than August.

Are American gay destinations worth it from the UK?

Provincetown, Palm Springs and Key West are excellent but involve eight to eleven hours of flying plus connections. They make sense as a once-in-a-while trip, not as a comparison to a four-hour flight to Spain.

What should I check before booking somewhere unfamiliar?

The FCDO country page for that destination — most carry a specific LGBT+ section covering local law and social attitudes. It is the authoritative UK source and is kept current.
