How the “gay section” convention works
On a long public beach the gay stretch is usually the furthest from parking and family facilities, historically because that is where it could exist unbothered. The convention persists. In practice this means:
- You will walk further than you expect, often 15–30 minutes over sand.
- Facilities thin out as you go, so take water, sun protection and shade.
- The boundary is informal. Nobody polices it, and it drifts across a season.
Ask at a bar in the gay area of town for the current spot. It moves more often than websites suggest, and local information is a season ahead of anything published.
Nudity, honestly
Rules are per-beach, not per-country. Spain permits public nudity broadly and several of the beaches above are formally naturist; Greece is more mixed and depends on the specific beach. Two practical points:
- If nobody around you is nude, that answers the question.
- Naturist and cruising are not the same thing, and conflating them causes most of the friction that occurs on these beaches.
Behaviour, and why it is worth being careful
Several of these beaches sit inside protected natural areas — the Maspalomas dunes and Ses Salines on Ibiza are both nature reserves with real enforcement. Sexual activity in the dunes has been the subject of repeated local complaint and periodic police action, and fines are issued. Whatever your view of that, going in aware of it is better than finding out from an officer.

Practical kit and timing
- Go earlier than you think. Mediterranean beaches fill by late morning and the walk out is unpleasant at 2pm.
- Cash. Remote kiosks are often cash-only.
- Shoes. The Maspalomas walk in particular is long and hot underfoot.
- Leave valuables behind. Beach theft is the single most common holiday incident in every one of these resorts.
- Sun. Reapply. The most common medical problem in these resorts is not exotic.
