They are licensed businesses operating much like any other private members’ or leisure venue: you pay an entry fee, you get a locker and a towel, and facilities typically include a steam room, sauna, showers and private cabins. What actually happens when you arrive

The mechanics are the same nearly everywhere, and knowing them removes most first-visit awkwardness.

1. Reception. You pay, sometimes fill in a short membership form, and are given a locker or cabin key and usually a towel.
2. Changing room. You leave your clothes and valuables in the locker. Most people wear the towel.
3. Facilities. Typically a dry sauna, a steam room, showers, a lounge or bar area, and private cabins. Larger venues add a jacuzzi, gym or cinema room.
4. Leaving. You return the key and get any deposit back.

Staff are used to first-time visitors and will explain the layout if you ask at reception. Doing so is entirely normal.

Etiquette

• No means no, and it is communicated non-verbally as often as not. A turned head or a step back is a complete answer.
• Ask before touching. Being in the venue is not consent to anything.
• Phones and cameras are banned in every reputable venue, and this is enforced. Do not take one out.
• Shower before using the steam room and sauna.
• Tell staff if something is wrong. They are there for it, and would rather know.

Cost and timing

Entry is typically a flat fee with an added charge for a private cabin over a locker. Most venues run cheaper off-peak sessions — weekday afternoons are usually the quietest and cheapest — and many offer reduced entry for younger visitors or students. Some sell longer sessions or overnight stays.

Quietest is generally weekday daytime; busiest is Friday and Saturday evening and Sunday afternoon.

On safety, the practical risks are the ones above — heat, alcohol, and sexual health — rather than anything dramatic. Reputable venues have staff on the floor, enforce the no-phones rule, and will remove people who ignore refusals. Why there are so few left

The number has fallen sharply. Property values, licensing costs, and the shift of meeting to apps have all played a part — the same forces that closed gay bars and clubs, with the additional pressure that a sauna needs a large, plumbed, licensed premises.
